Definition

Review reply rate is the share of your Google (and other platform) reviews that you have responded to. A reply rate of 100% means every review, positive or negative, has a public response from the business; a reply rate of 0% means none do.

Google has stated publicly that responding to reviews matters, and the empirical evidence is consistent — restaurants in the top three of the Local Pack almost always have higher reply rates than restaurants below them. The signal is partly that responding feeds prominence signals, and partly that customers click into responsive profiles more.

The honest target is 100% reply rate within 48 hours. Negative reviews especially benefit from a fast, calm, public response — future customers reading the page see how you handle problems, which often matters more than the original complaint.

Replies should be specific, not template. Mentioning the dish, the visit date, or something the customer noted shows the response is genuine. AI tools can draft, but every reply needs a human read before it ships, especially the negative ones.

Why it matters for restaurants

A high reply rate is one of the few easy wins in local SEO. It costs nothing in cash, takes 5 minutes per review, signals attentiveness to both Google and customers, and is one of the few metrics that competitor restaurants almost universally underperform on. A restaurant going from 30% to 95% reply rate often sees pack rank improve within 8-12 weeks.

Example

A Korean BBQ spot in Atlanta had a reply rate of 22% across 380 Google reviews. They hired a part-time community manager who replied to every review (back-catalog and incoming) over six weeks. Their pack position for 'korean bbq atlanta' moved from 8 to 3, and they noted that the response rate also seemed to push more customers to leave reviews — likely because every reviewer saw their friends' replies acknowledged.
