Prominence Signals

Prominence is Google's read on whether a business is genuinely well-established. It rolls up review count, average rating, review velocity, inbound links from local sites, press mentions, and the breadth and quality of citations across the web.

Of the three local ranking signal families (proximity, relevance, prominence), prominence is the one that compounds slowly — it is what separates a one-year-old restaurant from a ten-year-old one.

Review signals dominate within prominence. Three numbers matter: how many reviews you have, how recent they are, and how high your average rating is. A 4.7-star restaurant with 800 reviews looks much more prominent than a 4.9-star one with 12. Google rewards the volume because it implies a long history of customers.

Beyond reviews, prominence is built by being mentioned and linked from other reputable local sources — a writeup in a local food blog, inclusion in a "best of neighborhood" list, links from your local chamber of commerce. These are slow-build assets, but they are what makes long-term local SEO durable.

Prominence is the signal that lets a restaurant outrank closer competitors. If you cannot win on proximity, prominence is your lever. It also explains why a brand-new restaurant has to wait 6-12 months before a Local Pack ranking — the prominence has not had time to accumulate.
