Definition
Photos on a Google Business Profile come from two sources: ones you upload as the owner, and ones customers upload via Google Maps. Both appear in the profile, and together they drive a meaningful share of how a customer chooses your restaurant after seeing the listing.
Owner photos are categorized by Google: cover, profile, exterior, interior, food and drink, team, by owner. Restaurants should have at least one strong photo in each category and should refresh photos every quarter. Recency matters — Google surfaces newer photos more.
Customer photos are not under your control, but you can encourage them. The best lever is good food and a photogenic interior, not a sign asking for photos. The second-best lever is to make sure the photogenic things are visible to customers — table presentation, well-lit room, signage worth photographing.
Photo count and recency feed prominence signals. Studies of pack-ranking restaurants consistently find that top-three businesses have more photos and more recent photos than position 4-10. The cause-and-effect is fuzzy — better restaurants attract more photos — but the correlation is strong enough to be worth acting on.
Why it matters for restaurants
Photos are the most-clicked element on a Google Business Profile. A restaurant with 80 fresh photos gets meaningfully more click-through than the same restaurant with 8 stale ones — and Google appears to use that click-through behavior as a ranking signal. Adding 5-10 fresh photos per month is the cheapest steady investment a restaurant can make.
Example
A poke spot in San Diego had 14 photos, mostly customer uploads of mediocre lighting. They hired a local food photographer for one afternoon ($350) and uploaded 50 strong shots — bowls, ingredients, interior, exterior at different times of day. Click-through from their GBP impressions rose 71% the following month.
